Most mediation software was designed either for large legal firms or generic case management, rather than the day-to-day reality of independent mediators.
Before becoming a mediator, I spent years building software. So when I found myself spending more time managing the process than focusing on the people involved, I started looking at the problem differently.
Why was mediation software either built for large legal firms, filled with features most independent mediators would never use, or not built specifically for mediation at all?
The alternative was what many mediators end up doing: creating their own system. A folder structure. A spreadsheet. Email threads. Messaging apps. Reminders. A collection of tools that work individually, but were never designed to work together.
Sure, it seems like it works, until the complexity of the case catches up with you.
The more mediators I spoke to, the clearer it became that this wasn’t my problem alone. Everyone had developed their own workaround. Everyone was spending time managing information instead of doing what they became mediators to do.
That was the point where the idea for iMedi8 changed from “this is frustrating” to “this needs to be solved.”
We brought together people who understood both sides: the realities of mediation and the discipline of building reliable software.
